Mai Kawasumi is a Champion from Airlocked! season 3.

While she acts like she has no feelings at all, Mai Kawasumi is actually very emotional, just extremely repressed about it. She pushes her feelings down and rejects them because she fears that she doesn't deserve to have feelings of her own or be a bother to others, and that may not be all she runs away from when it comes to herself. Mai is a season three Champion who starts to warm up to the others despite herself, even if she admits that she's bad with people, but if something happens that hits her hard, she shuts up immediately. This totally never leads to anything terrible. In fact, none of this does. What? Why are you looking at us like we're lying to you? Look over there.

Mai initially remembered being a high school student in the town of Monomi on Earth 1. She is actually a graduate, though she missed university entrance exams and was never able to attend university. She still seems fairly adept with animal care, when she isn't throwing good sense out the window and adopting a pet WILD BEAR.

Mai is the Champion Scapegoat, named such because she was blamed for the actions of the demons she fought both at home and in Airlocked! itself.

Season 3

Mai was so closed off and emotionless when she arrived at the IGS Fantasy Sweet that she put others off. She seemed to be used to that, but when the Champions started to share their stories, she showed bits of emotion, such as moving to protect Finn from Roland King and going into shock when Takumi mentioned that he'd been healed. She slowly started to connect with the other Champions, becoming somewhat close to Mikaela, Arianna of Caledonia (her persistent roommate), and Clarith, who not only looked like her but also shared her pain of being persecuted for being different. Mai admitted that she had fought demons since the age of eight, and because these monsters were invisible, she was blamed for their crimes.

However, the demons came from her own power to make things real, as she had repressed and rejected her powers and emotions and believed that she deserved bad things happening to her. This was revealed to her and everyone only after Mikaela was found dead, killed by a demon. The men had also fought a demon at their sleepover, and both that and the encounter that killed Michaela left markings on Mai. Clarith had to be stopped from killing Mai, but when she was held back and was able to see that Mai had no intention of stopping her and believed that she deserved whatever Clarith could do to her, Clarith gave in. She and Ardyn Tenmyouji both told Mai that they understood her and related to her, something Mai had never heard before. Yuuri Wakasa promised Mai that she would live before Mai was taken to be executed, leaving the rest of the group shocked and angry.

Related characters and concepts

  • Sayuri Kurata: Mai's close friend from school, her only friend for years. However, Mai pushed her away when she feared that she was endangering Sayuri, and she never told her about the demons. Sayuri found out about the demons on her own and was nearly killed by them. In the bonus content, Mai tells Lee Wisniewski that she loved Sayuri but never pursued it, feeling that Sayuri was too good for her.
  • Yuuichi Aizawa: Mai's other friend, whom she'd just met weeks prior to her first memory in Airlocked! However, it turned out that Yuuichi was actually the friend who "abandoned" her in her childhood; what she'd taken as an excuse to leave her as so many others had was a legitimate need to leave town and he had tried to meet her again when he returned other times but failed. He has a girlfriend who was last known to be in a coma.
  • Mai's mother: Given name unknown. Mai's mother was ill with an unknown disease that killed her, only for Mai to restore her to life and heal her fully. She doesn't seem to blame Mai for their following misfortune, but Mai doesn't want to be a bother.
  • Mai's aunt: Name unknown. Had Mai heal animals on TV to exploit her for money so the family could pay Mai's mother's medical bills.
  • Unknown Ikiryou: Mai mentions this girl in the bonus content. She is Yuuichi's girlfriend and an ikiryou, which is a person in a comatose state who astral projects and appears to be a regular person. However, once ikiryou are discovered to be comatose, they are forgotten; Mai admits that even she doesn't know why she and others have not forgotten this person. Fans have theorized that she may have woken up, Mai may have been mistaken, or the girl was actually an illusion created by E.P.'s organization somehow.
  • Boobies: Have their own page.

Notes

  • Leonard Church believed that Mai's emotionless exterior meant that she was a robot. However, if Penny Polendina and C.E.C.E. are any indication, robots in this universe may actually be more emotional than organic species.
  • It is often theorized that Arianna was intended to be Mai's victim and Michaela intended to be the survivor who married Clarith, but for some reason, their roles were switched mid-prodution.

Trivia

  • Mai is the only Season 3 character to wake up believing herself to be under the age of majority; however, she believed she was only five days away from her eighteenth birthday, so this was mitigated soon.
  • Mai eats about two or three times as much as the average human her size. It is theorized that this is because she worked it all off hunting demons and, later, training other dead Champions in swordfighting.
