Trivia

Arianna in Deadland

Early holovision listings listed episode 45 as follows:

Sleeping Beauty
Arianna is tempted to give up on reality to be with her family.

Fans were intrigued by the different title and bizarre summary, and additionally noted that this idea seemed to be a better fit for Arianna using the simulation, given the state of deadland at the time. Speculation abounded that the episode had been hastily and heavily rewritten for any number of reasons, with the most popular guess being that the episode had been meant to heavily feature a character (usually guessed to be Clarith or Takumi of Hoshido) whose actor was unavailable for filming.

During the Airlocked! panel at VQCC 73, writer Cecilia Rosana addressed the issue at last:

That was a very early version of the Flavortown episode. We already knew the dead Champions were moving into the mall, which was an area the living ones also had access to, so we wanted to do something with that, and we came up with this episode where Arianna was going to go back to the mall, only all the dead people were there. She was going to meet Yuuri and Clarith and Mai again and have tearful reunions. And of course at this point she was really having trouble, a lot of trouble with the environment and losing people, and she was going to start thinking that maybe she could just stay here with her loved ones and never wake up. And in the end she was going to decide she had to go back and be separated from everyone again, but at least this time she'd get to say goodbye. We all loved it, Kip couldn't get through it without crying. But it caused problems for the rest of the series. Nina thought having a real reunion like that, especially so close to the end, would undercut the finale, and we all had to agree she was probably right, and it also felt like a deus ex machina for Arianna's character arc, and then there was the question of why can't she just go back and forth. [laughs] So we ultimately had to scrap the reunion. And that was ultimately for the best because we came up with the Flavortown angle, which let us reintroduce Radical Skullqueen so she didn't come out of nowhere in "Illumination," and it let Arianna have a real focus episode instead of just sort of being our guide to the dead people. But we did miss out on one thing, and I was very disappointed about it, which was a scene where Arianna opens up the door to her Bed Buddies kiosk and find Yuuri and Junpei there and they're just about to, you know, get started! [audience laughs] We did reuse some of the dialogue we'd written for the finale, so that was good.
