Trials are the main "gameplay" element of Airlocked!, in which the Champions attempt to determine who was responsible for the murder of one of their own. They are moderated by Overseers.

Structure

No two trials proceed in identical fashion, but for the most part they follow a predictable basic structure:

  1. Presentation of evidence: Champions describe what they have discovered during investigation.
  2. Debate: Champions discuss the meaning of the evidence and, where applicable, search each other and make comparisons.
  3. Confrontation: The Champions zero in on a suspect, who generally attempts to argue in their defense before eventually confessing. Sometimes called "MTB" for obscure reasons.
  4. Voting: The Champions each enter a vote for who they believe to be the killer, typically the Champion who was the subject of the confrontation.
  5. Execution: If the Champion who received the greatest number of votes was indeed the culprit, the culprit is executed. Otherwise, the other Champions are subjected to a mass execution.

Trials are generally followed by an informal gathering, nicknamed the "afterparty" by the fandom.

Unusual cases

  • In the final trial of season 1, the Champions ignored the evidence and voting entirely in favor of attacking the Overseers, beginning an altercation that resulted in two consecutive executions, killing all but two of the Champions and severely injuring one of the Overseers.
  • In the final trial of season 2, the Champions deliberately voted incorrectly, and subsequently survived the resulting mass execution thanks to Jamie Fell.

Notes

  • Trials are referred to as "rose ceremonies" in season 3, though with no difference in the proceedings.
