Champions are the protagonists of Airlocked!. They are people who are exceptional in some way who have been abducted by E.P.'s organization and forced to be "contestants" on the deadly "reality show" that forms the premise of the series.

Titles

Champions are each assigned a title which is meant to reflect their exceptional qualities. This takes the form of "Champion ____" or "Champion of ____." Toby for example is the Champion Weapons Engineer, meaning he is the very best weapons engineer in all of existence. Champion titles are usually complimentary in this manner, but in some cases Champions have been assigned titles based on exceptional negative traits. Choromatsu Matsuno, for example, is the Champion Useless Heterosexual, suggesting that his mating urges impair him to a worse extent than any other resident of Anime Earth, and Clarith is the Champion Bystander, suggesting a particular talent for failing to be of any importance.

The meanings of Champion titles are not always straightforward. The Champion Sovereign, for instance, is not the most effective ruler, but the most powerful user of the skills used by her world's rulers. The Champion of Counterfeits is not the most prolific forger, but the most convincing forgery. Not even the "Champion" part of the title necessarily always means the same thing, as the Champion of Earth is not Earth's most exemplary resident, but its protector.

It's not clear what actually constitutes a trait worthy of Championship. It seems unlikely, for instance, that there are particularly many Chairmen of the Kijin Clan which is a subsidiary of the Omi Alliance, so why is it noteworthy to call Homare Nishitani the Champion of that position?

Ultimate Champion

Theoretically, each Champion's goal is to triumph over all the other Champions of their game by being the last one remaining, demonstrating that they are the "best of the best" and winning the game. This would endow them with the title of Ultimate Champion. The intended method of achieving this goal is to murder a fellow Champion and get away with it, thus sentencing all other Champions to mass execution.

In practice, this intended victory condition has never occurred. The game comprising seasons 1 and 2 ended with the Champions deliberately failing to find Xander of Nohr guilty, then evading mass execution, resulting in Xander being incorrectly declared Ultimate Champion while several more Champions still lived. The games in seasons 3 and 4 then ended prematurely because of Kip's rebellion and Blaze Dudely's failing health, respectively, with no Ultimate Champion being declared.

Notes

Speculation

  • A common theory as to the reason for Champion titles sometimes being odd or inconsistent is that the Champions are actually selected according to some other, as-yet-unrevealed criteria, and the titles are devised based on whatever trait can be claimed to be exemplary.
  • Building upon the above theory, some have speculated that the true purpose of the Champions is to avert an impending apocalypse on Earth. Nearly all Champions are from Earth-like worlds, if not versions of Earth itself, and many have been involved in apocalyptic events, whether preventing them, causing them, or merely being present for them.

Trivia

  • Nearly all Champions have been humans or human-like species.
