Yurika Misumaru is a Champion from Airlocked! season 2.

Yurika Misumaru (御統 ユリカ, Misumaru Yurika) is the captain of a privately owned battleship that was, for a time, taken over by the United Earth Armed Forces. While she is a competent strategist and shows this skill in investigations and trials, most of the time, she acts like a love-obsessed ditz. This causes people to underestimate her at first, though many of her fellow Champions recognize her skills by the end. She also ends up performing funerals on the space station, complaining that she's done too many of those at home. She considers the other Champions her crew and wants to keep them safe.

Her abilities apparently include being able to use teleportation technology that would instantly kill most humans thanks to exposure to the nanotech that terraformed Mars. However, these are not shown in-series due to this technology being unavailable, most likely because it would break the story. It is thus unknown whether her PIP nullifies this ability or not.

Her title, Champion Peacekeeper, likely refers to her attempts to end the Jovian War, but she can also be seen playing peacemaker among the Champions, who seem to expect her to thanks to the title.

Story

WARNING: Spoilers for Airlocked! season 2 follow.

Backstory

Yurika, an admiral's daughter who always wanted to be seen as herself instead of her father's child, spent her childhood with her dear friend and puppy crush Akito until she had to move to Earth for her father's work. When they reunited (as she tells Margulis, her suitcase hit him in the head), she claims that she knew it was destiny, and somehow, she ended up recruiting him to work on her own battleship. With the backing of a non-government arms dealer, Yurika led her crew back to Mars, where the survivors of her old home colony had been abandoned by the Earth government in favour of protecting Earth itself in a war against lizard aliens from Jupiter. However, their mission was a failure, as Yurika ended up in a situation where she had to protect her ship from the Jovians and, in doing so, destroyed the colony herself.

Disheartened, she and her crew returned to Earth and at some point discovered that she and other survivors of Mars could use Jovian teleportation technology, which was originally created by ancient Martians. They were made to work for the military for some time until they discovered that Earth had been conspiring to keep its citizens from learning the truth: the Jovians were not lizards but the descendants of exiled humans who had lost a war that Earth had meddled in to get control over its moon. Yurika resolved to make peace with them, and after the Earth government failed to get rid of her, they overthrew her ship and she went into hiding with much of the rest of her crew.

However, the crew of the Nadesico reunited and took back the ship. Unfortunately, despite commonalities including Yurika and Akito being fans of the show that the Jovians built their society around, the Jovian leader refused to accept a compromise and they were soon embroiled in a fight over the ruins that controlled the Chulip teleportation technology. In the end, Yurika and her crew took the ruins for themselves so that the Jovians and the Earthlings couldn't have them and they could finally end the Jovian War.

Season 5

Bonus Content

Yurika is mentioned a few times in the bonus content. Commander Margulis once says that she and Xander must both survive the ordeal if the rest of the group is to make it out, and in season three, Max Olguin mistakes a new arrival for her.

Related characters and concepts

Akito Tenkawa

Yurika's boyfriend at home. It is speculated that their relationship may not be as flawless as she describes it with how she mentions his telling her to go away and comments about other women having attracted his attention in the past; however, they did finally get together in the first memory she regained. She describes him as an amazing cook and a reluctant pilot, though given her high opinion of her own disgusting cooking, this may be difficult to believe.

Megumi Reinard

One of the women Yurika competed with for the object of her affections, or as she put it, who tried to steal him. Still, Yurika seems to regard "Megumi-chan" fondly otherwise. She mentions that Megumi was their communications officer to Jane, who eventually takes up the job on their own ship.

Omoikane

The AI running operations on Yurika's ship. Jane expresses worry over whether a fully thinking and feeling AI is a good idea, foreshadowing her rocky relationship with C.E.C.E. later.

Chulip Crystals/Chulips

Ancient Martian technology that allows Yurika to teleport herself and people/things around her through space-time.

Notes

Trivia

  • Yurika takes the position of helmswoman on the Temerity because nobody else was able to pilot. This is often taken to be a slight to the Doctor's driving skills.
  • Yurika is one of a small number of Champions who have received multiple species listings in different profiles, in her case going from simply human to "Human (modified)" in reference to her nanotech.
