Bear-san is an unofficial Champion who appeared in the bonus content only.

Bear-san is the pet of Mai Kawasumi, shared with her housemates, Lee Wisniewski and Mary Batson. He is an orphaned black bear who started to come into town to eat the garbage Lee had piled on Roomba Jack's lawn. Despite John's protests, they lured him home with food and began to train and feed him. He becomes more tame over time, albeit still poorly-behaved, regularly destroying furniture and other fixtures in all bonus content settings.

Prompto Argentum asked during his season if everyone in the simulation being dead included Bear-san; this led Mai to declare the bear an "unofficial Champion." The official Airlocked! website and Spitter account posted a Champion profile for the bear that day.

Bonus Content

In between Season 4 and the Season 1 rerun, Bear-san was introduced as a lone cub rooting around the town for food. He was spotted eating garbage off of the pile on Jack's lawn. While John chased him out of town and Ricky threatened to shoot him if he returned, Mai felt bad for the bear and watched to see if he would return. Satisfied over a few days that he was regularly coming to town and that he had no mother, Mai built a bear-sized doghouse and, following a plan Lee came up with, lay out a trail of food to lure the bear over. Initially, she couldn't think of a name and referred to him generically as "bear-san." Lee decided to treat this as the bear's actual name, and it stuck.

From there on, the two are often seen training Bear-san to go for walks, feeding him, and getting him accustomed to people. At one point, he is taken to the hotel pool to learn to swim. Bear-san grows over the course of his time in deadland, getting to almost twice his original size, albeit still a fairly small bear as his species isn't known to be large. The other Champions have trouble adjusting, but eventually get used to it, shown especially when the first deadland meeting is held with the first dead of Season 5 and Yuuri Wakasa wonders why no one seems to have noticed that there is a bear.

Bear-san is kept throughout every simulation reset, even those that eliminate other wildlife, and unlike the boobies, he is not hidden in Season 5. He particularly seems to enjoy the Flavortown setting of the simulation due to the wider availability of food and garbage. In the end, he was uploaded to Son of Ruri, which had previously belonged to Ardyn Izunia.

Notes

  • Bear-san appears to be afraid of Yuuri. It's uncertain whether this is because she was loud and visibly upset when he first saw her (as she startled him and he fell over) or because of her general menacing aura.

Trivia

  • It is often mentioned by the characters that keeping a wild bear as a pet is not advisable in real life and that the Champions who keep Bear-san can only do so because they are dead and in a lawless society. Regardless, there was a brief upswing in the Earth illegal pet trade from his introduction until the Great Kratchak Escape of Eleventhmonth reminded everyone that this was a terrible idea.
